What Is COB LED? Why Professional Installers Choose It Over Standard Strips
A clear introduction to COB LED technology — how it works, what makes it different from SMD, and why it's the go-to choice for professional LED strip installations.

If you’ve ever seen an LED strip that produces perfectly even, seamless light with no visible dots — that’s COB LED. Here’s a plain-language explanation of what it is, how it works, and why professional installers consistently choose it over standard strip lighting.
What Is COB LED?
COB stands for Chip On Board — a manufacturing technology where hundreds of tiny LED chips (320–512 per meter in strip form) are bonded directly onto a copper PCB substrate, then sealed under a continuous phosphor layer.
The result: when powered on, light emerges as a seamless, continuous line — dot-free, with no visible individual chips and no gaps between them.
Compare this with SMD LED (Surface Mount Device) strips, where discrete chips are soldered at regular intervals. The spacing between chips is clearly visible as a repeating dot pattern, especially when the strip is viewed up close.
How It Works
COB LED operates on the same fundamental physics as all LEDs — current through a semiconductor emits light. What’s different is the construction:
- High chip density — 320+ chips per meter are positioned close enough that human vision perceives them as continuous line, not individual points
- Full-coverage phosphor — rather than coating each chip separately, a single phosphor layer covers the entire array, producing consistent color across the whole strip
- Heavy copper PCB — improves heat spreading and reduces electrical resistance (important for voltage drop management)
- 180° beam angle — wider than SMD’s typical 120°, producing softer, more diffused light naturally
COB vs SMD: Side by Side
| Feature | COB LED | SMD LED |
|---|---|---|
| Light quality | Continuous, no dots | Visible individual chips |
| Beam angle | 180° | 120° |
| Best for cove lighting | Excellent | Acceptable with diffuser |
| Cut increment | Every 1–2.5cm | Every 2.5–5cm |
| Price | Slightly higher | Lower |
Why Professional Installers Choose COB
- Clients can’t see the dots — the installation looks polished and high-end regardless of viewing distance
- Simpler placement — no need to carefully position chip gaps; the strip looks good anywhere
- Better durability — heat distributes across the entire chip array instead of concentrating at individual points
- Happier clients — clean, smooth light = fewer callbacks and complaints
Where COB LED Excels
- Cove lighting / Bua Son Fai — the premier choice; seamless ceiling reflection
- Under-cabinet kitchen strips — consistent task lighting with no dark gaps
- Furniture edge accents — elegant clean lines without visible dots
- Decorative backlights — premium look that sets apart high-quality installations
Summary
COB LED delivers premium-quality ambient and task lighting for a price that’s no longer significantly more than standard SMD. If the strip will be visible and the quality of light matters, COB is the right choice every time.
